SEO describes work that improves how people discover content through search. AEO and GEO are commonly used for visibility in direct answers and generated responses. The labels can be useful, but they do not establish separate, guaranteed ranking systems or a special format every website must adopt.

Start with the requirements of the search system

For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says the same foundational SEO practices remain relevant. Pages need to be accessible, eligible for Search and useful to the reader. Its AI features guidance does not require a special optimization layer.

Other retrieval systems have their own crawl and display behavior. Do not assume a technique that affects one product also controls another, or that appearing in an answer means a model was trained on your page.

Answer the question and provide the evidence

State the answer clearly, then explain the conditions, examples and limitations that make it useful. For an analytics project, that might mean describing the source systems, the KPI definition and what the result can actually demonstrate. A short answer is helpful when it is accurate; brevity alone does not make content authoritative.

Make original work easy to verify

Attribute articles accurately, link authors to relevant professional information and connect project claims to source material where permission allows. A real implementation example, a documented method or a clearly explained limitation can offer information a generic summary cannot.

Use structured data to describe visible facts

Organization, article and author markup should agree with the page. Do not label a company as a person or add ratings and credentials that are absent from the visible content. Structured data can describe eligible content; it does not guarantee a citation or a rich result.

Keep technical work proportional

Maintain robots.txt, canonical URLs, internal links and an accurate sitemap. Google explicitly states in its generative AI optimization guide that it does not use llms.txt or require new AI text files for Search. Such files should not displace work on useful pages and reliable delivery.

Measure discovery separately from business results

Use Search Console to evaluate Google search performance by page and query. Track referral visits and inquiries in analytics where the referring system supplies that information. A manual check of whether a brand appears in a generated response is a sample of one response, not a complete measure of visibility.

For content teams, the practical priority is a clear editorial purpose: answer questions relevant to the business, contribute evidence from actual work and make the next useful resource easy to find.
